Learn why SunTek is our primary PPF brand. Discover the benefits of SunTek Ultra and Reaction paint protection films for Bay Area vehicles.
When it comes to paint protection film, we install more SunTek than any other brand. This isn't by accident—after testing every major PPF brand over three decades, SunTek earned its place as our go-to film through consistent quality, outstanding value, and exceptional real-world performance.
The Journey to SunTek: How We Chose Our Primary Brand
Our Testing Philosophy
At Blackout, we don't just install products—we evaluate them thoroughly:
- Real-world testing on shop vehicles and personal cars
- Customer feedback tracked over years of installations
- Warranty claims analyzed for pattern issues
- Long-term performance observed on return customers' vehicles
- Installer experience factored into the equation
Brands We've Installed Over the Years
| Brand | Years Used | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 3M | 1990s-2010s | Reliable, but competitors caught up |
| XPEL | 2010s-2015 | Excellent, but premium pricing |
| SunTek | 2015-Present | Best balance of quality and value |
| STEK | 2018-Present | Premium option we offer alongside SunTek |
| LLumar | 2016-Present | Available for specific applications |
Why We Chose SunTek
1. Consistent Quality Roll After Roll
One of the biggest headaches in PPF installation is inconsistency. Film from the same brand can vary between production runs—different clarity, adhesive behavior, or self-healing performance.
SunTek delivers:
- Uniform film thickness across rolls
- Consistent adhesive performance
- Reliable self-healing every time
- Predictable stretch and conformability
For installers, consistency means predictable results. For you, it means your installation meets expectations every time.
2. Exceptional Value for Customers
Premium protection shouldn't require premium pricing. SunTek delivers performance comparable to the most expensive films at significantly better value.
Typical savings vs. XPEL:
- Full front package: Save $300-500
- Full vehicle coverage: Save $800-1,500
- Track package: Save $400-700
What you get for less:
- Same 10-year warranty
- Comparable self-healing
- Excellent optical clarity
- Professional-grade protection
3. Strong Partnership Benefits
Our relationship with SunTek means better service for you:
Direct factory relationship:
- Priority access to products (no backorders)
- Latest product innovations first
- Technical support when needed
- Efficient warranty processing
Training and certification:
- Regular training on new techniques
- Certification program recognition
- Access to best practices documentation
- Pattern updates for new vehicles
4. Bay Area Performance
SunTek performs exceptionally in our local climate:
Bay Area challenges:
- Temperature swings (coast fog to inland heat)
- Salt air near coast
- Highway debris on 101/85/680
- Year-round sun exposure
SunTek response:
- Stable adhesive through temperature changes
- Excellent UV resistance
- Impact protection for highway driving
- No yellowing in our climate
SunTek Films We Install
SunTek Ultra (Gloss)
Our most popular PPF option. Ultra is a high-gloss, self-healing film that works for virtually any vehicle and application.
Technical specifications:
| Property | SunTek Ultra |
|---|---|
| Thickness | 8.0 mil |
| Elongation | 400%+ |
| Clarity | Excellent |
| Self-healing | Yes (heat-activated) |
| Warranty | 10 years |
| Top coat | Hydrophobic |
Ideal applications:
- Front-end protection (hood, bumper, fenders, mirrors)
- Full-vehicle wraps for maximum coverage
- Any color vehicle—the film virtually disappears
- Daily drivers and high-end vehicles alike
Key features breakdown:
Self-healing performance: Light scratches from car washes, minor contact, and environmental debris heal with heat (sunlight, warm water, or heat gun). Healing time: 15-60 minutes depending on temperature.
Optical clarity: Ultra is engineered for invisibility. On dark colors, you can't see the film. On light colors, only trained eyes notice edges—and even then, only in certain lighting.
Stain resistance: The topcoat resists watermarks, bug splatter staining, and bird dropping etching better than previous generations. Still recommend prompt cleaning, but you have more margin for error.
Long-term durability: We have customers with 7+ year-old Ultra installations still performing well. The warranty is 10 years, and properly maintained film often exceeds that.
SunTek Reaction (Hydrophobic)
Enhanced water-beading for easier maintenance. Reaction adds superior hydrophobic properties to the same great protection.
What makes Reaction different:
| Property | SunTek Ultra | SunTek Reaction |
|---|---|---|
| Base protection | Excellent | Excellent |
| Self-healing | Yes | Yes |
| Water beading | Good | Excellent |
| Cleaning ease | Good | Superior |
| Price | $$ | $$+ |
The hydrophobic advantage:
- Water beads and rolls off the surface
- Bugs and tar release more easily
- Road grime doesn't stick as strongly
- Washing takes less time and effort
Best for:
- Customers who prioritize easy maintenance
- Dark-colored vehicles that show water spots
- People who want PPF that works like ceramic coating
- Those who wash their own vehicles
SunTek PPF Matte
For satin and matte finishes. If your vehicle has matte paint (or you want the matte look), SunTek offers film that maintains the satin appearance.
Applications:
- Factory matte paint protection
- Color change film (matte finish)
- Stealth appearance on gloss paint
- Contrast panels (matte hood, gloss body)
SunTek vs. XPEL: Our Honest Comparison
We get this question constantly: "Is XPEL better than SunTek?"
Here's the truth: Both are excellent premium PPF brands. Neither is objectively "better"—they're different products with different strengths.
Feature-by-Feature Comparison
| Feature | SunTek Ultra | XPEL Ultimate Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Self-healing | Excellent | Excellent |
| Clarity | Excellent | Excellent |
| Warranty | 10 years | 10 years |
| Thickness | 8.0 mil | 8.0 mil |
| Pattern library | Good (expanding) | Extensive (DAP) |
| Installer network | Growing | Very large |
| Price point | $$ | $$$ |
Where XPEL Wins
Pattern coverage: XPEL's DAP (Design Access Program) has the largest pattern library in the industry. For obscure vehicles or specific-year model variations, XPEL may have pre-cut patterns we'd have to hand-cut with other films.
Brand recognition: XPEL has invested heavily in marketing. Some customers specifically want the XPEL name based on reputation.
Certified installer network: More XPEL-certified installers nationwide means easier warranty processing if you move or travel.
Where SunTek Wins
Value: Comparable protection at lower cost. The savings go into your pocket, not marketing budgets.
Installer relationship: We chose SunTek for our shop—that means we're deeply familiar with the product, optimized our techniques for it, and have a direct relationship for support.
Performance: In side-by-side testing, we can't find meaningful performance differences. Self-healing, clarity, and durability are essentially equivalent.
Our Recommendation
For most Bay Area drivers: SunTek Ultra offers the best combination of protection, quality, and value.
If you specifically want XPEL: We can point you to certified installers in the area. We won't try to sell you something you don't want.
Real-World Performance: What We See
After thousands of SunTek installations, here's the performance data:
Protection Statistics (Customer Feedback)
Rock chip protection:
- 95%+ of customers report zero chips on protected areas
- Highway commuters (101/85/680) especially satisfied
- Construction zone protection highly rated
Self-healing usage:
- Most light scratches heal within 24-48 hours in summer
- Winter healing may take 3-5 days or require warm water
- Customers report 90%+ of wash scratches disappear
Warranty claims (SunTek installations):
- Less than 2% warranty claim rate
- Most claims are edge lifting (often user error)
- SunTek processes claims efficiently (typically 1-2 weeks)
Long-Term Observations
5+ year installations:
- Film still performing well
- Self-healing slightly reduced but functional
- No yellowing in Bay Area climate
- Edge adhesion holding on properly maintained cars
10+ year installations:
- Film approaching end of optimal life
- Self-healing noticeably reduced
- Some may show mild discoloration
- Still protective but replacement recommended
Our SunTek Installation Process
Quality film deserves quality installation. Here's our process:
Step 1: Vehicle Inspection (30-60 minutes)
Before we start:
- Document existing paint condition
- Identify any pre-existing damage
- Note soft areas (rock chip patterns)
- Discuss coverage options
- Set realistic expectations
Step 2: Thorough Preparation (60-90 minutes)
Surface preparation is critical:
- Complete wash (foam cannon + hand wash)
- Clay bar decontamination
- IPA wipe (isopropyl alcohol removes oils)
- Panel-by-panel inspection
- Final wipe before installation
Why this matters: Contamination under PPF creates bubbles, lifting, and failed adhesion. Shortcuts here cause problems for years.
Step 3: Pattern Preparation (15-30 minutes)
Computer-cut precision:
- Select patterns for exact make/model/year
- Account for any factory variations
- Prepare multiple panels simultaneously
- Cut backup pieces for complex areas
Step 4: Installation (2-8 hours depending on coverage)
Careful application:
- Apply slip solution to paint and film
- Position film with proper orientation
- Squeegee out solution working center to edges
- Stretch and tuck at edges where possible
- Wrap edges around panels for durability
- Heat-seal edges for permanent adhesion
Step 5: Final Inspection (30 minutes)
Quality control:
- Inspect every panel in multiple lighting
- Check all edges and tucked areas
- Look for any trapped debris or bubbles
- Photo document completion
- Walk customer through final product
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SunTek PPF as good as XPEL?
Yes—for all practical purposes. In side-by-side testing of self-healing, clarity, and durability, we can't identify meaningful performance differences. Both are premium films with 10-year warranties. The main difference is price (SunTek is typically 10-15% less) and XPEL's larger pattern library for obscure vehicles. For most cars, SunTek Ultra matches XPEL Ultimate Plus performance.
Why don't you carry XPEL?
Strategic focus and value. We chose to specialize in SunTek because it offers our customers the best value without sacrificing quality. Rather than carrying every brand, we've built deep expertise with SunTek and can deliver consistently excellent installations. If a customer specifically wants XPEL, we respect that and can recommend certified installers.
How long does SunTek PPF last?
7-10 years with proper care, often longer. We have SunTek Ultra installations from 2017 still performing well. The 10-year warranty covers yellowing, cracking, and peeling. Lifespan depends on sun exposure, washing habits, and whether the car is garaged—but SunTek performs comparably to any premium film.
Can I add ceramic coating over SunTek PPF?
Absolutely—we recommend it. Ceramic coating over SunTek PPF provides enhanced hydrophobicity, easier cleaning, and additional UV protection. Wait 4-6 weeks after PPF installation for full cure before applying ceramic. The combination is our most popular protection package.
Does SunTek PPF work on Tesla's soft paint?
Yes, excellently. Tesla's water-based paint is notoriously soft and chips easily—making PPF essential. SunTek Ultra's 8 mil thickness absorbs rock impacts before they reach paint. We install more SunTek on Teslas than any other brand. See our Tesla PPF guide for details.
What's the difference between SunTek Ultra and Reaction?
Hydrophobic performance. Both films have the same base protection, self-healing, and warranty. Reaction adds an enhanced hydrophobic topcoat that beads water better and releases contaminants more easily. If easy maintenance is your priority, Reaction is worth the upgrade. For most customers, Ultra provides excellent performance at slightly lower cost.
How does SunTek warranty work?
Straightforward 10-year coverage. SunTek's warranty covers yellowing, cracking, peeling, and adhesive failure for 10 years from installation date. Warranty claims go through the installer (us)—we handle documentation and communication with SunTek directly. Most claims resolve in 1-2 weeks. Coverage requires professional installation by an authorized dealer.
Do you offer any other PPF brands?
Yes. While SunTek is our primary recommendation, we also install:
- STEK DYNOshield — Premium option with superior hydrophobic coating
- 3M Pro Series — Budget-conscious option with solid performance
- LLumar PPF — Available for specific applications
We'll recommend the best option for your vehicle, budget, and priorities.
Cost Comparison: SunTek vs. Other Brands
Typical Bay Area Pricing
| Coverage | SunTek Ultra | XPEL Ultimate | STEK DYNOshield |
