Gloss or matte? Metallic or solid? Match the car or contrast? And what about when your dream color doesn't exist in powder form?
Here's everything you need to know about picking the right powder coating color.
Finish Types Explained
Before choosing a color, understand the finish options. The same color looks completely different in gloss versus matte.
Gloss Finishes

Satin Finishes
Characteristics:
- Subtle sheen, not quite matte
- Hides minor imperfections
- Modern, OEM-like appearance
- Popular for factory+ look
Best for: Daily drivers, newer vehicles, understated style
Matte Finishes
Characteristics:
- Zero reflection
- Industrial, aggressive appearance
- Requires more careful cleaning
- Can show water spots
Best for: Off-road vehicles, tactical builds, specific aesthetic goals
Textured Finishes
Characteristics:
- Wrinkle, hammer-tone, or sand texture
- Hides damage extremely well
- Very durable
- Limited color selection
Best for: Tow hooks, bumpers, recovery gear, utilitarian parts

Color Matching Your Vehicle
Same Color as Body
Pros:
- Cohesive, factory appearance
- Custom look without being flashy
- Great for unique paint colors
Cons:
- Exact match is difficult
- Powder coating has different texture than car paint
- Small variations are visible
Our approach: We match as closely as possible using color chips and camera matching. 90%+ accuracy is typical, but identical matches aren't guaranteed.
Complementary Colors
This is often more successful than exact matching:
| Car Color | Complementary Wheel Colors |
|---|---|
| White | Gloss black, bronze, gunmetal |
| Black | Gunmetal, bronze, gloss black, anthracite |
| Silver/Gray | Gloss black, satin black, bronze |
| Red | Gloss black, anthracite, gunmetal |
| Blue | Bronze, gunmetal, anthracite |
| Green | Bronze, gold, satin black |
Contrasting Colors
For a statement look:
| Car Color | Bold Wheel Options |
|---|---|
| White | Gold, candy red, bronze |
| Black | Gold, white, candy colors |
| Gray | Bright bronze, gold |
| Neutral | Neon colors (proceed with caution) |
Matching Calipers to Wheels
Powdered calipers add another design element. Here's what works:
Matching Approaches
| Strategy | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Wheels match calipers | Both gunmetal | Cohesive, subtle |
| Calipers accent | Black wheels, red calipers | Performance look |
| Car color calipers | Wheels black, calipers body color | High-end feel |
| Yellow calipers | Any wheel color | Porsche/track look |
Popular Caliper Colors
- Red — The classic performance look (Brembo style)
- Yellow — Porsche, Ferrari vibes
- Black — Stealth, works with everything
- Body color — Custom, premium appearance
- Blue — BMW M, Subaru STI look
Custom & Special Colors
What's Possible
Powder coating offers nearly unlimited color options through:
- RAL color system — 1,600+ standardized colors
- Prismatic/Tiger catalogs — Thousands of automotive-specific options
- Custom blending — For truly unique colors (minimum order required)
- Candy finishes — Translucent color over metallic base
- Color-shifting — Changes appearance in different light
Minimum Orders for Custom Colors
| Powder Type | Minimum Order |
|---|---|
| Standard RAL colors | No minimum |
| Specialty metallics | No minimum |
| Custom mixed colors | 1 lb (~4 wheels worth) |
| Special effect powders | Varies by manufacturer |
What's Not Possible (Easily)
- Chrome — True chrome requires electroplating, not powder coating. Chrome-look powders exist but don't match real chrome.
- Color-match perfection — Powder coating texture differs from automotive paint
- Pearlescent matches — Very difficult; pearls shift in different light
The Selection Process
Step 1: Bring Reference Photos
Show us:
- Your car's exact color
- Wheels you like on similar cars
- Interior colors if matching
- Any accent colors on the car
Step 2: Review Physical Samples
Photos on screens lie. Colors look different in:
- Sunlight vs shade
- Morning vs afternoon
- Gloss vs matte
We have color sample panels at our Gilroy shop. Come see them in person.
Step 3: Consider the Full Picture
Ask yourself:
- How long will I keep this car?
- Am I selling soon? (stick to neutral)
- What's the resale impact?
- Will I get tired of bold colors?
Safe bet: Gloss black or gunmetal works on nearly every vehicle and holds resale value.

Color FAQs
Can you exactly match my car's paint color?
We can get very close (90%+), but exact matches are difficult. Powder coating has a different texture than automotive paint, so even identical colors look slightly different. Complementary colors often work better than exact matching.
How do I know what color to pick without seeing it in person?
You don't—that's why we recommend visiting our shop. Screen colors aren't accurate. We have hundreds of physical samples you can hold against your car.
Will metallic powder coating match my metallic car paint?
Metallic powders exist, but the flake size and density differ from automotive paint. It'll be close, not identical. Bronze, gunmetal, and anthracite typically work better than trying to match exact OEM metallics.
Can I change the color later?
Yes, but it requires stripping the existing coating first—adding time and cost. Choose carefully the first time.
What's the most popular wheel color?
Gloss black, by far. It's 60%+ of our wheel orders. Satin black is second, followed by gunmetal.
