Learn professional interior detailing techniques. Complete guide covering leather, fabric, plastics, glass, and proper product selection.
Your car's interior takes a beating. Coffee spills, food crumbs, sun damage, body oils on the steering wheel, dust in every crevice.
Regular vacuuming helps, but professional interior detailing transforms a cabin—restoring that new-car feeling and extending the life of interior surfaces.
Here's exactly how we do it.
What Professional Interior Detailing Includes
A full interior detail typically covers:
- Deep vacuuming (seats, carpet, trunk)
- All surfaces cleaned (dash, console, doors)
- Leather cleaned and conditioned
- Fabric shampooed or extracted
- Glass cleaned (inside and out)
- Vents and crevices detailed
- Plastics protected
- Odor elimination
- Final inspection
Time required: 2–5 hours depending on vehicle size and condition
The Professional Process
Step 1: Remove and Assess
Before cleaning:
Remove everything:
- Floor mats
- Trash
- Personal items
- Removable cup holders/ashtrays
Assess condition:
- Note stains requiring extra attention
- Identify material types (leather, vinyl, fabric)
- Check for damage or wear
This prevents surprises and ensures nothing gets damaged.
Step 2: Blow Out and Vacuum
Compressed air first: We use compressed air to blow debris from:
- Air vents
- Seat crevices
- Between console and seats
- Under seat rails
This loosens embedded dirt before vacuuming.
Thorough vacuuming:
- All seats (move forward and back to access rails)
- Carpet and floor areas
- Trunk/cargo area
- Door pockets and storage areas
- Headliner (gentle brush attachment)
Pro tip: Agitate carpet with a stiff brush before vacuuming to lift embedded dirt.
Step 3: Clean Hard Surfaces
Dashboard and console:
- Apply all-purpose interior cleaner to microfiber cloth
- Wipe all surfaces including buttons and knobs
- Use detailing brush for textured areas
- Buff dry with clean microfiber
Steering wheel: High-touch area requiring careful attention:
- Use pH-neutral cleaner (leather or vinyl specific)
- Gently scrub with soft brush
- Wipe completely dry for safe grip
- Condition if leather
Door panels:
- Wipe handles, armrests, map pockets
- Clean window switches and controls
- Wipe door jambs (often forgotten)
Center console:
- Clean cup holders (often worst area)
- Clean gear selector area
- Clean storage compartments
- Screen cleaning with appropriate product
Step 4: Clean Seats
Leather seats:
- Vacuum to remove debris
- Apply leather cleaner
- Agitate with soft horsehair brush
- Wipe clean with damp microfiber
- Allow to dry
- Apply leather conditioner
- Buff to finish
Fabric seats:
- Vacuum thoroughly
- Pre-treat stains if needed
- Apply carpet/upholstery cleaner
- Agitate with upholstery brush
- Extract with hot water extractor
- Allow to dry completely
Common stain treatments:
| Stain Type | Treatment |
|---|---|
| Coffee/soda | Enzyme cleaner |
| Ink | Isopropyl alcohol |
| Grease/oil | Degreaser, then cleaner |
| Food | Enzyme cleaner |
| Mold/mildew | Antimicrobial cleaner |
Step 5: Clean Carpet and Floor Mats
Carpet:
- Vacuum thoroughly
- Apply carpet cleaner
- Agitate with stiff brush
- Extract with hot water extractor
- Allow to dry before driving
Floor mats:
Rubber/plastic:
- Remove from vehicle
- Pressure wash or scrub with brush
- Apply all-purpose cleaner
- Rinse and hang dry
Carpet mats:
- Vacuum both sides
- Shampoo and extract
- Hang to dry completely
Step 6: Clean Glass
Interior glass collects film from:
- Off-gassing of plastics
- Smoke residue
- Touch marks
- Cleaning product overspray
Proper glass cleaning:
- Use ammonia-free glass cleaner
- Clean with waffle-weave microfiber
- First pass horizontal, second pass vertical
- Check for streaks in direct light
- Don't forget rearview mirror
Windshield tip: The inside of the windshield is often the dirtiest. Take extra time here.
Step 7: Final Touches
Protect surfaces: Apply interior protectant to:
- Dashboard (matte finish protectant)
- Door panels
- Center console
- Vinyl/rubber surfaces
Choose finish level:
- Matte/satin for modern look
- Semi-gloss for moderate sheen
- Avoid high-gloss (looks artificial)
Air freshener (optional):
- Avoid overpowering scents
- Under-seat options last longer
- Ozone treatment for severe odors
Dealing with Odors
Common Odor Sources
| Odor | Source | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Musty | Moisture/mold | Ozone, antimicrobial treatment |
| Smoke | Cigarettes | Ozone, enzyme cleaner, headliner treatment |
| Pet | Dogs/cats | Enzyme cleaner, extraction |
| Food | Spills | Deep cleaning, enzyme treatment |
| Body odor | Seat absorption | Extraction, enzymes |
Ozone Treatment
For severe odors, ozone generators:
- Kill odor-causing bacteria
- Neutralize smoke particles
- Eliminate musty smells
- Treat areas cleaning can't reach
Caution: Ozone is harmful to breathe. Vehicle must be unoccupied during treatment and ventilated after.
