Car stereo won't turn on after installation? Here are the most common causes and how to fix them—from simple to complex.
Car Stereo Won't Turn On?
You turn the key, expect music, get silence. Frustrating—but usually fixable.
Here's how to diagnose and fix it.
Quick Checks First
Check 1: Is the Car On?
Some stereos only work with ignition on. Try:
- ACC position
- Engine running
- Different key positions
Check 2: Is It Muted or Volume Down?
Sounds obvious, but:
- Check mute button
- Check volume knob
- Check balance/fade (speakers off?)
Check 3: Look at the Display
- No display at all = Power issue
- Display on, no sound = Audio/amp issue
- Flashing/resetting = Power or ground problem
Most Common Causes
1. Blown Fuse (Most Common)
Symptoms: Completely dead, no display, no lights
Fix:
- Check fuse behind stereo (pull unit, inspect inline fuse)
- Check vehicle fuse box (radio/accessory fuse)
- Replace with correct amperage
Common fuse ratings:
- Head unit: 10-15A
- Amplifier: 20-40A (or higher)
2. Disconnected Wiring
Symptoms: Was working, now dead after work done
Check:
- Harness connections behind stereo
- Ground wire connection
- Power wires (constant 12V and switched 12V)
Fix: Reconnect properly, check for bent/pushed pins
3. Bad Ground
Symptoms:
- Cuts in and out
- Works sometimes
- Display flickers
- Protects when loud
Fix:
- Locate ground wire (usually black)
- Check connection point
- Sand to bare metal
- Use star washer
- Tighten securely
4. Wrong Wiring
Symptoms: Never worked after installation
Common mistakes:
- Constant 12V and switched 12V reversed
- Ground not connected
- Wrong harness adapter
Fix: Verify wiring with diagram, test with multimeter
5. Protection Mode
Symptoms: Amp shows protect light, stereo works
Causes:
- Speaker wire short
- Amp overheating
- Too low impedance load
Fix: Check speaker wires for shorts, ensure proper impedance
6. Anti-Theft Lock
Symptoms: Displays "CODE" or "LOCKED"
Cause: Battery disconnect triggered theft protection
Fix: Enter code (check manual, glovebox, dealer)
Diagnostic Steps
Step 1: Check Fuses
In the car:
- Find fuse panel (under dash or hood)
- Locate radio/accessory fuse
- Inspect—replace if blown
Behind the stereo:
- Pull head unit (carefully)
- Check inline fuse on power wire
- Replace if blown
Step 2: Test for Power
What you need: Test light or multimeter
Check at stereo connector:
- Constant 12V (yellow wire typically)
- Switched 12V (red wire typically)
- Ground (black wire typically)
Expected results:
- Yellow: 12V always (key off)
- Red: 12V with ignition on
- Black: 0V (should ground to chassis)
Step 3: Check Ground
Test method:
- Disconnect ground from stereo
- Run temporary ground to known good chassis point
- Does stereo work? Bad ground location.
Step 4: Test the Unit
If power is good but unit dead:
- Try different unit in same car (rules out unit vs wiring)
- Try unit in different car (rules out harness)

Why It Stops Working
Many modern cars need:
- Anti-theft code entered
- Factory reset
- Relearning procedure
Common Solutions
Factory stereo: Enter radio code (often in owner's manual)
Aftermarket: Usually just needs power—no code
Premium systems: May need dealer reset
